One of Goa’s most unusual religious traditions can be found at St. Anthony Church in Siolim, where a statue of St. Anthony of Padua is uniquely depicted holding a serpent tied with a cord. According to the traditional account, two Portuguese merchants were caught in a violent storm while travelling to Goa with a statue of St. Anthony. Fearing for their lives, they prayed to the saint and vowed to build a church in his honour if they survived. Their ship eventually reached the Chapora River near Marna, Siolim, where they met Franciscan missionaries who were raising funds for a new church. The merchants fulfilled their vow by contributing to the construction and donating the statue. But during construction, workers were reportedly terrified by a large serpent that repeatedly appeared at the site. The workers and friars prayed to St. Anthony and placed his statue inside the unfinished chapel. The next morning, according to the traditional story, the serpent was found caught around the cord in St. Anthony’s hand. The incident was regarded as a miracle and became known as the “Second Miracle of Saint Anthony.” The serpent later became a distinctive symbol of the church and can also be seen in other representations inside the church, including the bell. The present Neo-Gothic church was built on the same site, with its foundation stone laid in 1902 and the church completed and consecrated on 28 December 1907. More than 400 years later, the serpent remains one of the most fascinating symbols of Siolim’s religious and cultural heritage.
