The aria 'Seufzer, Tränen, Kummer, Not' – recorded here for All of Bach with Shunske Sato – is part of one of Bach’s most frequently performed cantatas: Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis, BWV 21. Bach probably wrote this cantata in 1713 for the funeral of the wife of a high court official. In the aria, the soprano sings of her grief with long pauses and ‘seufzer’ (musical sighs). The accompanying sighing oboe frames her lament. Recorded for the project All of Bach on 22 April 2021 at TivoliVredenburg, Utrecht.
