Agüimes, Gran Canaria: The Old Town Walking Tour

Agüimes is Gran Canaria's best preserved inland historic town, offering a sunny escape with its Casco Histórico just 30 minutes from the southern coast. If you are dealing with overcast skies in Maspalomas, driving inland past the airport almost always leads to clear blue skies. I spent the morning walking through the beautifully maintained streets of Agüimes to see exactly what this historic centre has to offer. The town is surprisingly grand for its size, completely dominated by the massive neoclassical architecture of the Parroquia de San Sebastián, which towers over the surrounding residential alleys. Unlike the purpose-built holiday zones in the south, Agüimes is a real, functioning town. As you walk through the colourful streets and quiet courtyards near Plaza de Santo Domingo, you'll find peculiar metal sculptures scattered around the area—including life-sized dogs, donkeys, and outdoor furniture. The drive up is straightforward, with a well-marked winding road that leads to plenty of free parking right near the historic squares. It's the perfect place to grab a local coffee, escape the crowds, and see a completely different side of the island.
