Lenana was one of the most important Maasai leaders in the history of Kenya, but his story is far more complicated than many people realize. In this video, we explore the life of Lenana, the famous Maasai Laibon, his father Mbatian, his rivalry with his brother Senteu, and his relationship with the British during the early years of colonial Kenya. Lenana lived at a time when traditional Maasai society was facing enormous changes. After the death of his father Mbatian, a struggle over succession emerged between Lenana and Senteu. Lenana eventually became the leading Maasai Laibon and later worked with the British colonial administration, placing him in a difficult position between traditional Maasai leadership and the rapidly expanding colonial system. But who was Lenana really? Was he a leader protecting his people, a political collaborator, or a man trying to navigate a changing world with limited choices? This story explores the events and circumstances that shaped his life and legacy. You may know the name Lenana from Lenana School or Lenana Peak on Mount Kenya, but behind that familiar name was a real Maasai leader whose life was closely connected to some of the most important events in Kenya's colonial history.
