Fixing a No-Display Zorba (1983) Portable: CRT Controller Chip Swap Brings It Back Jeff from Retro Ranger digs into a 1983 Zorba suitcase portable that powers on and posts with fans and drives running, but shows nothing on the CRT and also outputs no composite video. After carefully opening the molded shell, noting hidden screws under the handle, and checking the machine’s overall clean interior, he verifies the 5V/12V rails are good and traces video-related signals at the P4 connector with an oscilloscope. With noisy, unstable sync/video behavior and no obvious capacitor, trace, or board damage, he narrows the fault to the socketed CRT controller (an IBM-marked Intel-era chip). Swapping in a compatible CRT controller from a second Zorba restores a crisp display and the “Insert disk into A and hit return” prompt, confirming the original chip had failed. 🛠️ *TOOLS & EQUIPMENT I USE* Some of the tools and equipment you’ll see on the Retro Ranger workbench: 🔹 *Siglent SDS1104X-E Oscilloscope* https://amzn.to/4gA80UU 🔹 *OWON XDM1041 Digital Multimeter* https://amzn.to/4y5jRRT 🔹 *TRIX Variable DC Bench Power Supply – 30V 10A, 615W* https://amzn.to/4wSiB3t 🔹 *Sabrent BLOWZER X6 Electric Air Duster* https://amzn.to/4quFvw5 🔹 *MECO ELEVERDE Electric Air Duster* https://amzn.to/4in3qvv 🔹 *WD-40 Specialist Contact Cleaner – Fast-Dry, No-Residue* https://amzn.to/4qK9gJO 🔹 *DeoxIT D5 Contact Cleaner – D5S-6 Spray* https://amzn.to/3Ule6AW 🔹 *SEQURE HT140 2-in-1 Hot Tweezers / Soldering Iron Kit* https://amzn.to/4gzkM5V 🔹 *Hakko FA400-04 Smoke Absorber / Fume Extractor* https://amzn.to/4gDPQS1 🔹 *Hakko FR301 Portable Desoldering Tool* https://amzn.to/4gwuV3d 🔹 *JOYALENS JL249MS 10.1" HDMI Digital Microscope – 2000X* https://amzn.to/4cXNAUv 🔹 *YIHUA 959D Digital Hot Air Rework Station* https://amzn.to/4wVuPse As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. 00:00 Meet the Zorba 00:37 Cracking the Case 04:01 Inside and Power Checks 06:07 Composite Video Test 09:04 Diagnostics and New Scope 12:02 Tracing the CRT Controller 14:06 Chip Swap Repair 17:49 Boot Screen Success 19:26 Wrap Up and Next Steps
