A playthrough of Philips' 1991 platformer for the Philips CD-i, Dark Castle.
Played through on the Beginner level. The "Help" screen, which describes how to play, begins at 1:00, and the game starts at 4:17.
At 27:46, I play for a bit on the Advanced level. I couldn't get through it, but I wanted to at least provide a glimpse of what it looks like. This was the best of my attempts before I gave up.
After posting my video of the Sega Genesis version ( • Dark Castle (Genesis) Playthrough ), several people brought up the CD-i version, and since I'm my own worst enemy, I decided to give it a go.
The Genesis version catches an endless amount of flak for the way it doesn't conform to the expectations players have for a platformer on a dedicated games console. But, with a bit of effort spent learning to play it, it is indeed playable. Fun, even. At least I thought so.
The CD-i was far better fit for a high-resolution flip-screen platformer than the Genesis was, yet the Genesis version did everything this one could not. It fit each stage on a single screen, letting you see the hazards coming straight at you. The controls, once you got used to the timing, responded with some base level of consistency. The difficulty level, though harsh, could be handled with practice and a solid memory of the enemies' movement patterns.
This version of Dark Castle perfectly demonstrates how the CD-i earned its reputation for being one of the worst game platforms of all time. It's broken, it's ugly, and it provides the sort of experience that would've taught you not to waste money on more CD-i games. It's not worth the effort it would take to write a novel on everything that's wrong with it, so I'll stop here and let the footage speak for itself.
Happy almost Halloween!
