The Showa district is doing its best to keep the old atmosphere alive, with events such as Showa-themed festivals. But compared with the more famous Little Edo area, it still feels like it could use a little more excitement! So I wrote “Koedo Twist” as my own little way of cheering it on. The “Meruhendo” record shop mentioned in the lyrics was inspired by Merurido, the legendary record shop that once operated in Kawagoe. Musically, it’s a wild mixture of rockabilly, Merseybeat and garage rock, driven by a simple three-chord progression and a hard, energetic beat. It’s definitely a very local Kawagoe rock ’n’ roll song, but that’s exactly the point! I hope Kawagoe’s wonderful retro districts continue to grow, come alive, and become even more fun in the years ahead.
