Rohini RS-1 role and mission life (1.2 years) per ISRO's RS-1 page; later Rohini satellites carried remote sensing sensors (ISRO SLV page); SLV-3 first stage later used as a PSLV booster (Wikipedia, SLV).
Notes: ISRO calls the first flight "partially successful" and counts India as the "sixth member" of space-faring nations (other counts say seventh). The computer warning and the press conferences are as Kalam himself described them (Tribune, 2003).
