LEATHER LUNG: ULTRA FUN DOOM, SLUDGE, STONER HEAVY METAL

Really, they don't NEED an introduction but in case you're unfamiliar, I give a rundown on the band, themselves, along with a summary of existing material and explain why they're unique in the doom/stoner/sludge sub-genre. 🪦 "Graveside Grin," Leather Lung's 3rd full-length will drop on March 15th with their latest single, "Spit in the Casket," available now on Magnetic Eye Records. 🪦 ☝️ The video begins with a brief introduction to "doom," the parent company to "subsidiaries" like sludge & stoner rock. To help explain, examples such as early Black Sabbath and Witchfinder General are used. Then, bands like Acid Bath and Buzzoven are mentioned to describe "sludge." THEN, for "stoner rock," it's Brant Bjork, former drummer of Kyuss and currently, "Stöner." In order to try and guess what some of LL's motivation might have been for coming together, I use an example of another Massachusetts band that formed in the early 2000s, Bury Your Dead, who, its members, previous to THEIR formation, played in bands that sounded somewhat similar to European acts like In Flames and At The Gates. Breaking away from this sound, the new act chose a much less complex equation reminiscent of hardcore bands like Throwdown, Hatebreed and All out War. So, though not from the same sub-genre, a theory is presented that Lung employed a close strategy: keep things simple instead of relying on the use of jammy, abstract sections common for many doom bands (Sleep, Weedeater, etc.). So, with this, Leather Lung play an easily-digestible "stomp"-inducing kind of sludge through making use of mid-to-slightly-slower-than mid-paced tempos with occasional "fast" parts- though not as fast as what would be considered thrash; rather when a band like Orange Goblin speed up. Vocally and headed by a singer who, when on stage, is a lot like David Lee Roth from Van Halen, many of their songs have ultra scratchy, "throaty" leads with periodic clean parts not too different from what's common in doom (REZN, Acid Mammoth, etc. etc. etc.). Theme-wise, I explain that situations vary in a way that's like any other band that isn't 1-track only but rather fun, mad, or indifferent (Guns N' Roses, for example [Paradise City, Move to the City vs. Right Next Door to Hell, Coma]). Ultimately, I absolutely love, love, love Leather Lung. In my opinion, it's extremely easy to anyway and I'm enormously thankful they exist for times when you may not wanna strictly "space out" or get lost in a jam, but just rock or stomp. But aside from any particular "feeling" you may have one way or the other (like, if you're in a certain sorta "mood;" let's say, where only one particular sound might satisfy at that moment), this band simply... delivers. As a matter of fact, I explain that: Leather Lung is a "guarantee." Their existing material so far guarantees that at no point will you hear any sort of straying from their sub-genre into a place like emo or thrash or hardcore or death metal or black metal. And really, you can start anywhere in their catalogue and be thrilled. Whether it's, as I put it, the first Street Fighter game in 2014's Reap What You Sow EP, Street Fighter 2: their first full-length, Lost in Temptation (2016), Lonesome, On'ry and Evil (2019), the Dive Bar Devil EP (2022) or "Spit in the Casket" from the upcoming Graveside Grin full-length --- all together, the experience is gonna rule and I can't share my enthusiasm loud enough.
