On July 2, I took my kids and Luna to hike Table Mountain in southern Alberta. We stayed overnight in Pincher Creek, which made for a short drive to the trailhead.
This wasn't a dramatic adventure or a hike filled with unexpected events—just a beautiful day on the trail with my kids, who occasionally got a little cranky because hiking isn't exactly their favourite activity. 😄 But they agreed to come along so we could spend some time together as a family, and I'm glad we did.
The hike begins with a pleasant forest trail before reaching a rocky section alongside a beautiful creek. Along the way, there are a couple of steep, scrambly sections where you need to watch your footing and occasionally use your hands.
Eventually, we reached a beautiful viewpoint before tackling the final steep section toward the false summit—the iconic flat "table" of Table Mountain, surrounded by impressive cliffs. This is the spot that makes for the classic Table Mountain photos, and you could certainly finish your hike here.
But we decided to keep going to the actual summit.
The views from the top were beautiful, with a huge panorama over the surrounding valley and Beaver Mines Lake. After the hike, we stopped at Beaver Mines Lake to take a break and cool our feet before heading back to our motel in Pincher Creek.
I think Table Mountain is a fantastic hike for anyone looking to move beyond easier intermediate trails and start pushing toward more challenging terrain. It isn't a full-blown scramble, but the steep rocky sections require some fitness, balance and confidence—and there are a few places where using your hands helps.
In summer, the meadows near the top are also filled with beautiful wildflowers.
The trail can be busy, and we passed quite a few people during our hike, but it never felt overcrowded. And once we reached the summit, we were lucky enough to have the views almost entirely to ourselves.
If you're looking for a hike that can help you transition from intermediate hiking toward more challenging terrain, Table Mountain is definitely worth considering.
