NOT WORTH THE EXPOSURE | Brian Bailey | Original UK Garage R&B
Sometimes there's absolutely nothing wrong with the person you're interested in.
She might be attractive, intelligent, funny, caring, and genuinely someone you could build a good relationship with.
And you still might not want to bother.
That's what my new song, "Not Worth The Exposure," is about.
I've reached a point in my life where the thought of starting another relationship feels more exhausting than exciting.
Meeting someone new. Getting to know each other. Telling all your stories again. Learning hers. Making time for each other. Adjusting your routines. Opening up emotionally. Building trust. Making plans.
And somewhere in the back of your mind, wondering whether you'll spend another year doing all of that just to end up exactly where you started.
It's not necessarily about being afraid of getting hurt.
It's about knowing how much effort goes into building a connection and no longer feeling particularly interested in making that investment.
And here's the important part.
There might be absolutely nothing wrong with her.
She might even be everything you once wanted.
But that doesn't automatically mean you have the energy or desire to pursue something anymore.
Being alone can become more appealing than the possibility of another relationship, even a potentially good one.
That's why I changed the chorus from "worth starting over" to "worth the exposure."
Because it's not just about starting again. It's about exposing yourself emotionally, letting someone into your life, and accepting all the possibilities that come with it.
Sometimes you just don't feel like doing that anymore.
MUSICALLY:
This is another addition to my growing early-2000s-inspired UK garage R&B collection.
It features a shuffled 2-step rhythm, deep rolling bass, atmospheric textures, soulful melodies, and layered vocals.
I also did something a little different with the vocal production on this one.
After listening to the original Suno arrangement, I decided to increase the volume of the deeper backing vocals until they were actually sitting slightly above the higher lead vocal.
The higher voice is still technically carrying the lead melody, but the deeper vocal has enough presence that your ears can almost lose track of which voice is leading.
It creates an interesting shifting relationship between the two vocal registers, with a fuller, richer harmony.
And to my ears, it sounds considerably better than the original arrangement.
Sometimes the best production decisions come from ignoring the conventional way of doing things and simply listening to what sounds right.
This song joins "Nothing Left To Give," "Checked Out," "Just Be Yourself," and "Pay To Live."
Apparently, I've accidentally made it halfway through another album without actually planning to make one. Lol.
