150 million years of history are written beneath the Yucatán Peninsula. As sea levels rose and fell during the great Ice Ages, caves were repeatedly exposed and flooded. Drop by drop, stalactites, stalagmites and columns grew, preserving a remarkable record of the Earth’s changing climate. Over time, these caves also became witnesses to life itself. Ground sloths, tapirs, gomphotheres, bats and other species left traces behind. Later, the first humans entered passages that today lie underwater, leaving evidence of fire, tools, footprints and red ochre mining.
