In the winter of 1939, the Soviet Union invaded Finland.
Deep inside the frozen forests near Kollaa was a Finnish soldier who seemed almost impossible to find. He wore white camouflage, built his firing positions out of snow, and used a rifle without a scope.
His name was Simo Häyhä.
Over roughly 100 days of fighting, Häyhä was credited with 505 confirmed kills using his rifle, earning the name “White Death.” Soviet forces eventually began sending counter-snipers and artillery specifically to hunt him.
Then, just days before the Winter War ended, Häyhä was struck in the face by an exploding bullet.
He survived.
This is the story of the quiet Finnish farmer who became one of the most extraordinary snipers of the 20th century and then went back to living a remarkably ordinary life.
