The song is loosely concerning a mix of murder, trains, runaways, adultery and depression. The song had successfully passed in the oral tradition, becoming a well-known tune for both bluegrass hero Bill Monroe and blues legend Lead Belly. Kurt and Krist first played it on Mark Lanegan’s 1990 solo album The Winding Sheet, and later they would do their own version. And what a version it was to become!
