Mathematician spotlight: Dylan Thurston We do an example of looking at a vector field as the gradient of a function f(x,y). This is not possible for every vector field, but for those where it is, it helps to holistically understand the behavior. We define divergence and curl, compute it for our favorite vector fields, and discuss their geometric meaning.
