India’s defence electronics ecosystem is facing a strategic question that goes far beyond semiconductors: how secure is India’s national security when critical defence electronics components and semiconductor requirements depend heavily on global supply chains?
In this episode, we examine India’s growing reliance on imported defence electronics components, semiconductor dependency, defence technology, supply-chain security and the economic consequences of this vulnerability. We look at how imported chips and electronic components can affect India’s defence manufacturing, military systems, C4ISR networks, precision-guided weapons, electronic warfare and other mission-critical platforms.
Joining us is Dr Adityanjee, President, Council for Strategic Affairs, for an analytical discussion on India’s defence electronics strategy, semiconductor self-reliance, China-related supply-chain risks and the economic cost of strategic dependency.
The central question is uncomfortable: if the “brain” of modern defence hardware depends on foreign-made chips, where exactly does strategic autonomy begin—and where does it end?
The podcast brief notes that India sources more than 90% of its semiconductor requirements through global supply chains, while approximately 80% of imported electronic components are identified as coming from China and Hong Kong. These figures raise important questions about supply-chain concentration, national security and India’s ability to protect critical defence infrastructure.
But this is not simply a story about vulnerability.
India is also building an alternative.
We discuss ISRO’s Vikram-32, the indigenous 180nm CMOS microprocessor presented as an important symbol of India’s semiconductor capability. We then examine the Micron Sanand facility and the Tata Electronics–PSMC semiconductor fabrication project in Dholera, Gujarat. The Dholera fab is designed around 28nm–110nm processes and is expected to begin trial production in late 2026, with commercial scale-up projected through 2027–2028, according to the podcast brief.
But will building semiconductor fabs automatically create defence-electronics self-reliance?
That is the bigger question.
Defence systems do not always require the same chips as consumer electronics or automobiles. Mission-critical military systems can require specialised, reliable and sometimes radiation-hardened components, creating a different technological and economic challenge.
The episode also explores a crucial economic question: does semiconductor self-reliance mean simply manufacturing chips in India, or does true strategic autonomy require domestic design IP, specialised materials, manufacturing equipment, testing capability and a trusted defence supply chain?
