SIGNS OF THE TIMES — MARRIAGE, PART 2 “BE FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT” 📖 Ephesians 5:18–21 In this continuation of SIGNS OF THE TIMES: MARRIAGE, we go deeper into God's design for relationships by examining Ephesians 5:18–21. Before Paul gives instructions concerning husbands and wives, he first gives instructions concerning our relationship with God and with one another. He tells us: “Be filled with the Spirit.” That order is important. We live in a time when marriage is under tremendous pressure. Divorce, selfishness, individualism, broken communication, unrealistic expectations, and cultural influences are changing how many people view commitment and covenant. But Scripture brings us back to a fundamental truth: You cannot expect a marriage to consistently produce spiritual fruit when the individuals within it refuse to be led by the Spirit. In Ephesians 5, Paul shows us what a Spirit-filled life begins to produce: worship, gratitude, humility, fellowship, and submission to one another in the fear of God. Before asking, “What should my spouse be doing for me?” Scripture challenges us to ask: “What is the Holy Spirit producing in me?” Marriage is more than finding someone you love. Marriage requires learning how to live with another person while allowing God to confront pride, selfishness, impatience, unforgiveness, and the desire to always have our own way. This is why verse 21 becomes so important: “Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.” Biblical submission does not begin with domination or control. Paul first establishes a principle of believers walking in humility toward one another under the authority of God. That spiritual foundation prepares us to understand the instructions concerning marriage that follow. As the world's definition of relationships continues to change, believers must ask: Are we building marriage according to the spirit of the times, or are we building according to the Spirit of God? The world may tell us to protect ourselves at all costs. Christ teaches us how to sacrifice. The world celebrates self above covenant. Scripture teaches us how to become one. The world asks, “What am I getting?” God asks, “What are you becoming?” 💍 Marriage is not simply about finding the right person.
