A shoreline at the bottom of the ocean looks impossible. Why does this extra-salty lake stay beneath ordinary seawater? Follow a real brine pool, the robot above it, and the shell beds beside its edge.
Historical NOAA Gulf of Mexico footage from separate 2017 and 2018 dives. The main pool was filmed on 12 December 2017 in the Green Canyon area, St. Tammany Basin. Hidalgo Basin 2018 is a different site. Researchers interpreted shells inside the 2017 pool as animals that appeared to have drowned after the brine level rose; no death is shown. The 2018 slope stains were interpreted as a past brine-waterfall route, not a waterfall visibly pouring during the recording. The film does not claim that all brine pools kill every creature instantly or that visible colour measures salinity. Other Gulf seep communities are identified as separate historical scenes.
