Pineapple Poll Ballet Suite (1951) - Mackerras - G&S

Solidly surpassing simple samplings of Sullivan's Savoy scores, Mackerras's brilliant arrangement weaves together tunes from the operas with inspired orchestration. The only G&S operas not represented in Poll are Utopia Ltd., and The Grand Duke. With the copyright expiration on Sullivan's music in 1950, Sadler's Wells produced a ballet called Pineapple Poll. It was based on Gilbert's "The Bumboat Woman's Story" (a "happy ending" farce), and Sullivan's music was arranged by Charles Mackerras. It premiered in March, 1951, to coincide with the Festival of Britain, and caused an immediate sensation. The ballet became a fixture in the Sadler's Wells repertoire for many years.
