Ashley Judd, star of Kiss the Girls and Double Jeopardy, sits down with Dini Petty on October 13, 1993. Ruby in Paradise, her first starring role, had opened in theaters five days earlier. The film had already won the Sundance Grand Jury Prize. She was 25 years old, and the only famous thing about her was her last name.
What's here is the woman who became a movie star, not the movie star. A young actress who knew at 7 what she was supposed to do with her life, who almost joined the Peace Corps instead, who reads 5,000 pages of scripts a month from an apartment in Hollywood, and who drove from Nashville to Florida alone to research a character because she needed to know exactly what Ruby was leaving behind. She talks about Naomi, the diagnosis, the remission. She talks about Wynonna. She talks about what it costs to take yourself seriously when nobody knows your name yet.
This conversation aired once, on October 13, 1993, and has not been seen since.
