The HELL of Russian BMP Crews This video covers how the BMP came to be, starting with the Soviet assumption that any war in Europe would involve tactical nuclear strikes on both sides. You'll learn why that assumption created requirements for a vehicle where infantry could fight from inside without ever opening a hatch, how the designers placed the main fuel tank in the middle of the troop compartment to save space, and why the 73mm main gun was only accurate out to about 500 meters. The firing ports that were supposed to let soldiers shoot while sealed inside turned out to be nearly useless, and the vehicles ended up being used as simple troop taxis anyway. The video gets into Afghanistan, where 95% of RPG hits penetrated the armor and troops started riding on top of the hull because being thrown off by a blast gave you better odds than being inside when it hit. Then Desert Storm, where American Bradleys were engaging Iraqi BMPs before the Iraqis even knew they were there. The BMP3 was supposed to fix everything, but its aluminum armor burns and melts into the crew compartment when hit by shaped charges. After decades and tens of thousands built, the problems remain.
