What makes farming digital, and when does technology create a useful improvement? This opening lecture connects information, decisions, physical operations, and measurable outcomes. It distinguishes mechanization, precision agriculture, digital farming, and smart farming through practical classification examples.
Follow the development from engine-powered machinery to satellite observations, animal identity, positioning, connected services, and artificial intelligence. Real examples cover irrigation, robotic weeding, greenhouse decisions, livestock records, and food traceability. The focus stays on the complete decision workflow rather than a catalogue of devices.
Learning objectives:
• Explain which functions justify each farming label.
• Trace observations through interpretation, responsible action, and verification.
• Assess claims using a baseline, operating conditions, costs, and uncertainty.
• Recognize issues of skills, service, data portability, cybersecurity, access, and environmental boundaries.
The final exercises ask you to diagnose a dry irrigation zone and design one practical farm decision loop. Consider what can fail, who responds, and what evidence would demonstrate value. No specialist programming background is required.
