Could ordinary people ever afford to move to Mars? Right now no one can even compare ticket prices, because no company has sold a demonstrated passenger journey to the Martian surface. The real question isn't just the fare for the trip out, but what it costs to build a destination worth arriving at, and whether an average person could ever earn, finance, or be sponsored into a life there. What would it actually take to make a reusable ship pencil out financially, and how does a long interplanetary timetable change the economics of selling seats? How much does it cost to land meaningful cargo on Mars, when the largest payload delivered so far is on the order of one metric ton? What does it take to turn Martian water and atmospheric carbon dioxide into something a household or a returning ship can use? A quick note: the visuals in this video are illustrations built to accompany the science, not real photographs or footage of these events. If a moment from this one stays with you, let me know which one in the comments, I read every one.
