Is The Stock Market About To Crash?
Nobody can predict when the stock market will crash, but with the Shiller CAPE ratio sitting around 40, close to its dot-com record of 44, the market is genuinely expensive. An expensive market is not the same as a fragile one, and the worst crash of our lifetimes in 2008 started from a valuation of only about 27.
If you're asking whether the stock market is going to crash, what happens to your pension in a crash, or whether you should sell your investments now, this video walks through the evidence. We cover why 2008 was a leverage crisis rather than a valuation crisis, the market concentration risk of 10 companies making up more than 40% of the US index, the $700 billion AI spending bet, and how a 2 to 3 year cash buffer protects retirees from sequence of returns risk.
IS THE STOCK MARKET GOING TO CRASH?
Nobody can time it, but a cyclically adjusted price to earnings (CAPE) ratio of around 40 points to more muted returns ahead rather than a guaranteed crash. Going into 2008 the ratio was only about 27, yet the market still fell nearly 60%.
WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR PENSION IF THE STOCK MARKET CRASHES?
Falls of 10% or more come round roughly every 1 to 2 years, and more than 70% of them never turn into a full crash. If you're near retirement, holding 2 to 3 years of spending in cash means you never have to sell investments at the bottom.
SHOULD YOU SELL YOUR INVESTMENTS BEFORE A CRASH?
J.P. Morgan found $10,000 left in the US market from 2006 to 2025 grew to about $80,000, but missing just the 10 best days cut that to about $36,000. Six of those 10 best days came within 2 weeks of the worst ones.
