Dubai put luxury homes on sand pumped into the sea. Before anyone moved in, engineers deliberately made parts of the ground sink. Why would that help? Palm Jumeirah was supposed to create more beachfront. First, the builders had to stop waves from taking it away. Then their protection got in the way of the ships. Once the island looked finished, the hardest problem was still hiding beneath their feet. This illustrated documentary follows the chain of problems behind Dubai's famous palm: offshore sand, a huge rock breakwater, vibrating probes, two carefully planned openings, and beaches that eventually had to be delivered all over again. Would you buy a home on an island built from sand? Planet Cutaway explores extraordinary places by opening them up and following the problems their builders had to solve.
