Long Beach, California, is facing severe coastal damage as remnants of Hurricane Rachel drive powerful Pacific waves through a failing wooden bulkhead and into beachfront homes. Several properties have been red-tagged, evacuations remain in effect, and firefighters are monitoring buildings that could collapse. Meanwhile, Rachel’s moisture has triggered heavy rain and flash flood threats across Nevada, Arizona, and Southern California.
On the Long Beach Peninsula, nine buildings covering thirteen addresses had been red-tagged by Sunday, October 11. Emergency crews have deployed heavy sandbags, reinforced the damaged boardwalk, pumped floodwater, and cleared debris from storm drains. Although Sunday’s high tides came in lower than forecast, officials warn that the weakened coastal defenses remain vulnerable to additional surf.
Farther inland, Las Vegas recorded its wettest day since February 2019, with flooding reaching a casino parking lot on the Strip. Flash flood warnings also covered parts of northwestern Arizona, including areas near Kingman and the Grand Canyon Skywalk. More storms could bring additional flooding to the region in the days ahead.
In this video, we examine the damage to Long Beach homes, emergency evacuations and coastal repairs, the ocean conditions driving unusually high water levels, and the flash flood threats spreading across the Southwest.
Long Beach is pursuing a major beach restoration plan, but elevated tides and continuing surf could put already damaged homes at further risk.
Global Weather covers natural disasters and extreme weather events as they develop, using sourced reporting and avoiding unsupported speculation.
