The King's life is moving peacefully towards its close. Lord Dawson of Penn wrote those nine words on the back of a menu card at Sandringham on 20 January 1936. A little after eleven that night, the king's physician injected morphine and cocaine into the jugular vein of the dying King George V himself, because the nurse would not, and later wrote that he chose the time partly so the death would be announced first in the morning edition of The Times rather than "the less appropriate field of the evening journals."
This documentary tells the full story of how George V really died, from his heavy smoking and lung disease to the near-fatal 1928 chest infection that made Dawson famous, the Bognor recovery and the "Bugger Bognor" legend, the dying king's struggle to sign his last state paper, his recorded last words, the injection itself, and the Imperial State Crown cross that fell into the street on the way to his lying in state. It follows Dawson into the House of Lords debate on euthanasia ten months later, and the fifty-year secret kept by the nurse, the widow and the biographer until Francis Watson revealed the doctor's notes in 1986. Then it puts the case on trial. Mercy, convenience or murder?

The Times got its story the next morning under the headline "A Peaceful Ending at Midnight." It was nearly fifty-one years before anyone printed who had picked the time.
