About the Artwork
Water Lilies belongs to Claude Monet's celebrated series of paintings inspired by the water garden at his home in Giverny. The pond, flowers, reflections, and changing effects of light became recurring subjects throughout the later part of his career.
Monet began painting his water-lily pond repeatedly from the late 1890s onward, studying the way flowers, water, reflections, and light changed throughout different conditions. In his later works, the pond became less of a traditional landscape and more of a study of color, atmosphere, reflection, and the surface of the water.
This version of Water Lilies, dated 1916–1919, demonstrates Monet's increasingly fluid approach to painting. The water-lily pond fills the composition, creating a peaceful and immersive scene that works naturally as a long-duration display.
About the Artist
Claude Monet (1840–1926) was a French painter and one of the leading figures of Impressionism. He became known for painting directly from his observations of nature and for exploring changing light, color, weather, and atmosphere.
His garden at Giverny became an important source of inspiration during the later decades of his career. The water-lily pond and Japanese-style garden provided the subjects for some of his best-known paintings.
