Nestled in the mist-shrouded hills of Idukki, Kerala, lies Vandanmedu — a land of endless cardamom plantations, rich red earth, and towering shade trees. Here, the hills wear a thousand shades of green, the rain leaves every leaf glistening, and the mist drifts quietly through the plantations, embracing the land before the day has fully begun. It is a place where nature moves at its own pace, and where the story of Jose T. T. first took root.
His family moved to Vandanmedu when he was just five. At fifteen, he lost his mother and shouldered his family’s responsibilities far too young . To his parents and sisters, he was Josekutty. Tall, with his chin held high, he carried himself with a quiet strength that would come to define his life.
He went on to establish MAS Enterprises, enter the cardamom auction business in 1991, and begin exporting in 1996. By the 2010s, his enterprise had grown into one of India's largest cardamom exporters. Along the way, Josekutty became Jose Sir to many and Josechayan to the town he called home.
Yet, Jose left behind very little in his own words about himself or the way he worked. Perhaps, like so much else in his life, his story was never meant to be told by him.
This is not a biography. It is a portrait drawn from memory — from the voices, stories, and moments preserved by the people he left behind, as remembered and recounted to his son, Anjo.
For those who knew him, perhaps these memories will bring him close once more. For those who never had the chance to meet him, may they offer a glimpse of the man he was — and leave them wishing they had.
In loving memory of Jose T. T. (1955–2025)
