Sneak Peek ‘THE REAL Craigh na Dun’ Outlander Claire travels through the standing stones at Craigh na Dun. I finally found Craigh na dùn. Yes It is real place. You will immediatly recognise the hill from the roadside as you drive past. This is the hill that Claire watches the white witches do their dance in season 1 and where claire disappears through the stones. Graigh na Dun is of course a fictional place where it is surrounded by large magical standing stones. Im afraid to say that there are no standing stones visible and only appear to people who know magic. It is based on real standing stones found at Callanish and Clava Cairns. Infact these stones were created by the effects team of and can now be found at the studios in glasgow. Nevertheless there is some real Scottish archaeology at the site featuring a circular pattern of stones which may have simply been a sheep enclosure erected in the 18th century. Apparently the farmer is trying to get the standing stones placed here permanently for the tourists. This hill can be found in the area of Kinloch Ranoch at Tullochcroisk Farm, On the south side of the Dunalastair Reservoir in Tay Forest . The name "Tullochcroisk" from which the farmstead takes its name, is a combination of old Scots & Gaelic languages & roughly means the hillock of the cross. This dun (small hill) is topped by a stand of Scots pines. This area was used for the opening scenes in Season 1 with Frank and Claire driving along the road. Finally, who could forget that magical sunrise that started it all the morning Claire and Frank watch the ritual at the standing stones of Craigh na Dun? It was done using a giant light on a crane. roamin - Taking a walk ("gone on the piss, no told the missis an got lost”) scot - a native or inhabitant of Scotland.
