How Voice of Baceprot Took Heavy Metal From West Java to Glastonbury

From the rice fields of Singajaya, West Java, to some of the world’s biggest music festivals, Voice of Baceprot turned teenage restlessness into a global heavy metal story. Formed in 2014 by Firda “Marsya” Kurnia, Widi Rahmawati, and Euis Sitti Aisah, the Indonesian trio discovered music while still in school. What began with borrowed instruments and noisy rehearsals grew into songs confronting gender inequality, environmental destruction, freedom of expression, education, stereotypes, and the pressure placed on young women. This documentary explores how three hijab-wearing musicians found their voice through heavy metal, faced criticism and support at home and online, and carried their music from a small village in Garut to Wacken Open Air and, in 2024, Glastonbury Festival. More than a story about metal, this is a story about friendship, faith, identity, protest, and refusing to make your voice smaller.
