How Bollywood Normalised Rape Culture? Bollywood has given us some of the most influential stories in Indian popular culture. But what happens when films repeatedly portray rape, victim blaming, stalking, objectification, sexual harassment and the policing of women’s bodies as entertainment, romance, punishment or even redemption? In this video, we examine how Hindi cinema has historically represented women and sexual violence — from the “Good Woman vs Bad Woman” trope to victim blaming, the obsession with female purity and honour, stalking being presented as romance, and the disturbing trope of marrying the victim to her rapist. The larger question is uncomfortable: Does art imitate life? Or does life eventually imitate art? Did Bollywood merely reflect the misogyny and patriarchy already present in Indian society — or did decades of repeatedly portraying these ideas also help normalise them? This isn't an argument that every Bollywood film promotes rape culture. Films such as Damini and Pink have also confronted sexual violence and social attitudes towards survivors. The question is about the larger patterns and recurring tropes that popular cinema has reproduced over decades. Watch till the end and tell me what YOU think. Does Bollywood reflect society, or does Bollywood shape society?
