In this video, we’ll explore how a latent image is formed on an X-ray film — one of the most fundamental concepts in radiology and medical imaging!
Gurney-Mott theory :
1) Photon absorption: A photon of light strikes a silver halide crystal (like silver bromide), liberating an electron from a bromide ion and creating a "positive hole.
2) Electron trapping: The liberated electron migrates and gets trapped at a "sensitivity speck," which is a defect in the crystal. This makes the speck negatively charged.
3) Ag+ Ion migration: The negatively charged sensitivity speck attracts nearby positively charged silver ions Ag+ ions within the crystal.
4) Silver atom formation: A silver ion is neutralized when it combines with the trapped electron to form a neutral silver atom, depositing on the speck.
Latent image formation: This process repeats as more photons strike the crystal, leading to the accumulation of multiple silver atoms on the sensitivity speck. A small cluster of at least three to four atoms constitutes the latent image, making that part of the crystal developable into a visible, macroscopic clump of black metallic silver.
