The piece blends classical concerto form with 12-bar blues and was featured in the 1940 film "Second Chorus." The first movement opens with a rapid ensemble introduction, followed by Shaw’s rubato entrance and a bluesy ensemble build-up. The second movement features a boogie-woogie piano solo, Shaw’s improvisation, and showcases other instrumental solos. The third movement alternates Shaw’s improvised clarinet over a tom-tom groove with ensemble hits, culminating in a dramatic altissimo C and final ensemble flourish.
