David Padilla - The Mix: The Afterhours Mix (Disc 1) [1999 Miami Trance Mix CD] | DJ Mix Archive

This is disc 1 of The Mix: The Afterhours Mix, a 2-disc mix CD from 1999 mixed by David Padilla, one of the DJs who built Miami's afterhours scene. Padilla was a New Yorker. He came up as a teenager going to David Mancuso's Loft, where he met Larry Levan, Frankie Knuckles and David Morales, and he played at Xenon before moving to Miami Beach in 1989. That was right as South Beach was turning into a nightlife destination, and he landed the residency at the Warsaw Ballroom, one of the big rooms of that era. By 1992 Miami New Times was writing that if South Beach nightcrawlers were to appoint a DJ king, they would most likely crown David Padilla. In the 90s clubs on Miami Beach would close around 5am. The Mix was part of a group of afterhours clubs that would open at 4am and run until the last person went home, often until the afternoon. David Padilla was the The Mix's resident dj. This CD carries the club's name and was released on Max Music & Entertainment, and the label's head has said it was their best-selling release. You'll hear late 90s trance and progressive house, mostly European imports. It opens with DJ Taucher's remix of Quattara, goes into a long Brothers In Rhythm remix of Garbage's Special, then Greece 2000, Mother's Pride, Kamaya Painters and more melodic trance through to the end. It's a good snapshot of what a South Beach dance floor sounded like at sunrise in 1999. David Padilla passed away on August 19, 2020.
