As you emerge from between the stone houses, the blue sea opens before you.
Red rooftops surround the harbor, and sailing ships line the quays. Beyond them, the kingdom's white-towered castle stands on a hill overlooking the water.
After so many miles, the road has finally brought the three of you to a seaside town.
He stops a little ahead, looking toward the harbor.
“The sea. We can finally see it.”
She turns back toward you. The breeze loosens a few strands of her hair and lifts the edge of her red cloak.
You slow your steps and look beyond the stone wall.
Sunlight dances across the water, and white sails stand out against the blue sky. From below come the calls of birds and the voices of people working in the harbor.
You take a deep breath. There is a faint scent of salt in the air, unlike anything along the road before.
“Let's go down.”
He points toward a flight of stone steps leading to the waterfront.
The three of you begin the leisurely descent, passing fallen leaves scattered across the steps.
Golden foliage stirs above white tree trunks, while crimson ivy climbs around the windows of nearby houses. With every turn, the sea appears and disappears between the rooftops.
She slows each time, enjoying another glimpse of the view.
You find yourself stopping too. Noticing, he turns back.
“With views like these, we're hardly getting anywhere.”
But he rests a hand on the stone wall and looks down at the harbor once more.
No one suggests hurrying.
At the foot of the steps, you reach the waterfront.
Shop awnings line the street, and mooring ropes stretch toward the quay. A nearby sailing ship rocks gently on the small waves, its reflection slowly changing shape.
“I wonder where that ship came from.”
At her words, you look up at its sails.
Perhaps there is another town across the sea, and someone has traveled from there to reach this harbor.
Beyond the road you have followed, there are still paths you have never known. The thought brings a small, unexpected happiness.
He glances toward the castle on the hill.
“Shall we walk around the harbor before we head up there?”
She nods, and you fall into step beside them.
Above you is a wide blue sky. Beneath your feet are sunlit cobblestones. And close beside you, the sea seems to stretch on forever.
With the salt breeze around you, the three of you set off along the waterfront, taking in the sounds and sights of this new town.
