India’s semiconductor ambitions are entering a new phase — but Union Electronics & IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has issued a serious warning to the country’s chip industry and deep-tech startups.
As India expands its semiconductor design, manufacturing, packaging and supply-chain capabilities, Vaishnaw has urged the industry to remain vigilant against potential cyberattacks, geopolitical threats and other disruptions that could affect India’s emergence in the global semiconductor value chain.
In this video, we decode what Vaishnaw’s warning means for India’s semiconductor strategy and why chip manufacturing has become an increasingly important economic and strategic sector.
India is simultaneously scaling up Semicon 2.0, a ₹1,27,500-crore programme designed to strengthen the semiconductor ecosystem across six major areas: chip design, machines and materials, fabrication, advanced packaging, research and development, and talent.
According to the government, around $11–12 billion of semiconductor investment interest has emerged under Semicon 2.0, with projects expected across different parts of the chip supply chain.
The semiconductor push is also attracting major global investment. Applied Materials has announced plans for a $5 billion India investment through 2035, while other companies are expanding their presence across equipment, materials, packaging and manufacturing.
The government has also said that five semiconductor manufacturing plants have commenced commercial production, marking an important transition from policy development toward actual semiconductor manufacturing and exports.
This video examines:
• Ashwini Vaishnaw’s cyberattack warning
• India’s rising semiconductor capabilities
• Semicon 2.0 and the ₹1.27 lakh crore semiconductor mission
• India’s $11–12 billion semiconductor investment interest
• Cybersecurity and geopolitical risks to chip supply chains
• Why semiconductor manufacturing has strategic importance
• India’s push for domestic chip design and manufacturing
• Global companies investing in India’s semiconductor ecosystem
• The future of India’s chip industry and technology ambitions
Is India’s semiconductor rise creating a new geopolitical and cybersecurity challenge? What risks could emerge as India becomes a larger player in the global chip supply chain?
