November 1986. Michael Jackson sat down with Johnny Carson for a rare television interview, and for fifteen minutes it was exactly the gentle, funny segment everyone expected. Then the curtain opened on a surprise guest. Ozzy Osbourne walked out, shook Johnny's hand, and moved to take the seat beside him.
Michael stood up, walked to the other side of Johnny's desk, and sat down in the empty armchair. "It's my faith," he said softly. "And everybody knows what he sings about."
That year, half of America believed Ozzy Osbourne was a Satanist. He had just spent months in a courtroom accused of writing a song that killed a teenage boy. Everyone in that studio waited for him to explode.
Instead, he asked one question: "Which songs?"
What followed was nothing like the feud the newspapers wanted. It was an honest conversation between two men who had spent their whole lives being judged by people who had only heard about them — about a song that was really about alcohol, a cross worn the right way up, a music video Michael's own church had called the devil's work, and the night the King of Pop tried to teach the Prince of Darkness to moonwalk.
