Chief Eddie Guy of the Hamilton Police Department reflects on 32 years in law enforcement, military service in the Air Force, and a family legacy rooted in policing and public service. His experience has shaped a leadership philosophy centered on trust, accessibility, and ensuring officers receive the resources they need to serve effectively.
In this episode, Chief Guy discusses how police wellness has evolved from a culture of suppressing trauma and self-medicating toward peer support, critical-incident debriefings, and professional counseling. He shares his own decision to seek help after responding to the death of a child in a pedestrian collision and explains how untreated trauma has forced some officers to leave careers they once loved.
A major focus is the importance of occupationally specific mental-health care. Clinicians working with police and firefighters must understand the trauma, personalities, culture, and responsibilities that shape the profession. Confidentiality is equally important because officers need to trust that seeking assistance will not automatically send private information back to command.
Chief Guy also challenges leaders to make the inside of the police station feel safer than the street. A meaningful open-door policy requires more than saying the words; leaders must demonstrate through their behavior that employees can speak honestly, question decisions, and ask for help without fearing unfair treatment.
His message extends to officers’ families, who may notice behavioral changes before anyone at work does. He recommends that officers and spouses learn the warning signs of cumulative stress together so someone at home can recognize when the officer is no longer acting like themselves and help connect them with support.
