MTT leads a remarkable performance of Schumann's third and final symphony, the ""Rhenish"". Enjoy this archival performance from the New World Symphony's 2019-20 season.
Robert Schumann began composing for orchestra remarkably late in his career, completing four symphonies in the final decade of his working life. The last he penned was the “Rhenish” Symphony, written during his brief tenure as the music director of Düsseldorf’s orchestra. Named for the famous river on which that city sits, this Symphony forms a kind of tribute to what Schumann believed to be the region’s genial character. However, its signature music comes in the solemn penultimate movement, an expansive chorale inspired by a ceremony Schumann witnessed up the river at Cologne’s sublime gothic cathedral.
