10 Ancient Ocean Skeletons That Don’t Match Any Known Species In nineteen fifty-eight, a strip-mine worker cracking open ironstone nodules from a spoil heap in northeastern Illinois found something that had been waiting three hundred and nine million years to be seen. The nodule split cleanly, and pressed into the rock was the impression of an animal with a long, soft body, a claw-tipped proboscis extending from one end, and a pair of eyes mounted on rigid stalks projecting from its sides. The worker's name was Francis Tully, and he had no idea what he was looking at. He brought the fossil to the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, where scientists examined it with the same bewildered attention. The creature was clearly biological.
