LION VS BUFFALO is a wildlife documentary about the one animal on the African
savanna that lions cannot overpower — and the reason they kill him anyway.
An adult buffalo bull carries around eight hundred kilos. He can break a
lioness's shoulder with one turn of his head, and a lioness who can't hunt is
dead inside a month. He is the main prey of adult male lions in Kruger all the
same. This film follows him across six timescales: the hour a pride spends
testing a herd of three hundred and walking away; the day water writes for him,
because buffalo drink every day and almost all of the big water-tied grazers
live within fifteen kilometres of standing water; and the season he spends
outside the herd, where the grass is, and where the lions can finish what they
start.
Every bull leaves the herd eventually. It roughly triples his annual odds of
dying to lions — about thirteen per cent against four for a buffalo who stays.
Nothing forces him out. He loses condition inside the herd and puts it back on
outside it, and no bull alive has found a way to have both.
What you'll see
A pride decline three hundred buffalo and follow one animal for four days
A herd stand in the open for twenty minutes before drinking for eleven seconds
Four bulls turn outward in a clearing and send three lionesses back into the trees
A lioness reach ten metres in long grass and lose it to a shift in the wind
Watch what the buffalo does with the wind. That is the whole film.
