Why Your Indian College Still Teaches Turbo C++

In February, someone on an engineering-students subreddit posted their first-year lab screen: the blue Turbo C++ IDE, in 2026. The verdict on Indian engineering colleges is unanimous. The syllabus is from 1998, the professors are lazy, and the degree is a four-year attendance register. We read the syllabus. Karnataka's VTU sets one scheme for 205 colleges, and it put a Generative AI course on the books on 10 February 2023, ten weeks after ChatGPT launched. Its 2025 scheme adds Prompt Engineering and Agentic AI. The document isn't what's stuck. The machine that has to deliver it is. The C course every first-year takes lists "chalk and talk" as the teaching method for four of its five modules, names no compiler at all, and gives 20% of the practical exam to the handwritten write-up, so colleges fill the gap with whatever the lab already has. Teaching needs an M.Tech, with no way in for someone who has only shipped code. Core-branch faculty at leading private colleges in the Coimbatore region earn ₹20,000–30,000 a month. And AI has just repriced the whole arrangement: the part the machine can deliver is the part a model now does best, and the part it can't, someone asking you to explain your own code, is the part that now gets you hired.
