After 25 years of visiting Pattaya, the women and nightlife that once kept bringing me back are losing their attraction. Is it simply getting older, has Pattaya changed, or have my priorities shifted? For decades, Pattaya offered excitement, freedom, romance and the possibility of meeting someone special. But something has changed. Even the prospect of another holiday no longer excites me as it once did. In this personal Caveman Passport reflection, I explore three realisations about growing older and my changing relationship with Pattaya. First, the diminishing attraction. Is my desire declining with age, or have years of disappointing experiences gradually reduced my enthusiasm? Second, why Pattaya works so well for some older men, particularly those who can easily transport their interests and lifestyle abroad. But what happens when the activities that give your life meaning are rooted somewhere else? And finally, the changing dating landscape. For many older Western men, Southeast Asia once offered romantic opportunities that seemed increasingly difficult to find at home. But is that advantage disappearing as younger Western men increasingly travel and settle abroad? Along the way, I reflect on the difference between temporary excitement and genuine companionship, and why finding both attraction and compatibility can become increasingly challenging. This isn't a criticism of Pattaya or the men who enjoy living there. It's a personal reflection on ageing, changing expectations and what happens when a destination that once seemed irresistible begins to lose its pull. Perhaps other long-term Pattaya visitors will recognise something of their own experience.
