Why Cabrini Green Never Recovered: Chicago History Documentary

Stand at the corner of Division and Larrabee in Chicago today and you are standing in one of the most expensive residential districts in the Midwest. Thirty five years ago, the same corner was the middle of Cabrini-Green, seventy acres of public housing that had become the most notorious address in America. The conventional account says the project failed and was put down. The land tells a different story. This documentary follows the same seventy acres through Little Hell and Little Sicily, the model Frances Cabrini Rowhouses of 1942, Elizabeth Wood's Chicago Housing Authority, the tower construction of the Reds and the Whites, the withdrawal of jobs, maintenance, and policing, the 1970 Severin and Rizzato murders at Seward Park, Jane Byrne's three weeks at 1160 North Sedgwick, the death of seven-year-old Dantrell Davis in 1992, HOPE VI and the Plan for Transformation, the 1995-2011 demolitions, the right-to-return arithmetic, and the rowhouses that still stand behind their fences on the most valuable public housing site in America. Cabrini-Green did not sit in a dying neighborhood. It sat on some of the most valuable land in Chicago, one mile from the Magnificent Mile, and that fact explains its fate better than anything that happened inside its walls, including Candyman in 1992.
