Rudolf Beckmann, an SS officer and devoted Nazi, was among the key perpetrators of atrocities committed during the Holocaust. Born in Osnabrück in 1910, he began his involvement in mass murder at the Nazi euthanasia centers Grafeneck and Hadamar, where tens of thousands of disabled individuals were killed under the T4 program. In 1942, Beckmann was transferred to Sobibor death camp, where he oversaw the sorting of valuables stolen from murdered victims, camp administration, and even horses. But his duties extended beyond logistics — Beckmann was deeply complicit in the daily mechanics of genocide. At Sobibor, approximately 250,000 Jews were gassed within minutes of arrival, and Beckmann helped keep the extermination process running smoothly. While he enjoyed comforts and privileges denied to prisoners, Beckmann's brutality would not go unchallenged. On 14 October 1943, during the Sobibor uprising led by Soviet prisoners of war and Jewish inmates, Beckmann was assassinated by Chaim Engel, a Polish Jew. Engel stabbed him repeatedly in his office, crying out, “This is for my father, for my mother, for all the Jews you killed.” Beckmann’s murder was one of the first blows struck in the successful revolt, during which nearly 300 prisoners escaped the camp. Although many were killed during the escape or later hunted down, about 50 survived the war. The uprising led Heinrich Himmler to close and erase Sobibor from the map. Unlike many other Nazis, Beckmann did not face postwar justice — he died at the hands of those he helped oppress. He is remembered not only as a perpetrator of some of the worst crimes of the 20th century, but also as a symbol of what happens when oppressed people fight back, even in the face of overwhelming brutality.
