Lahore’s Biggest Rainwater Harvesting Project Begins! | Saving Water for Our Children

Lahore’s biggest rainwater harvesting project under the Teacher Usman Mission is about to begin! 🌧️💧 During my recent visit to Lahore, we started planning a major rainwater harvesting well at a six-kanal community site consisting of a mosque, madrassa and community centre, popularly known as Shishay Wali Masjid. This is not just another rainwater harvesting project. InshaAllah, this will become a learning and demonstration centre for Lahore, where people can come, understand how rainwater can be collected and recharged into the ground, and then implement similar systems in their own homes, mosques, schools, communities and neighbourhoods. Lahore is expanding rapidly. More roads, buildings and concrete surfaces mean less rainwater can naturally enter the soil. At the same time, areas around the Ravi River and other parts of the city are facing increasing water challenges. When heavy rain falls, enormous quantities of water can be lost through drainage systems and urban flooding instead of being captured and allowed to recharge the ground. The question is simple: If rainwater is falling on our cities, why should we allow it to become floodwater and then spend money searching for water later? We need to start saving rainwater today—for ourselves, for our communities and, most importantly, for our children and future generations. The Teacher Usman Mission is working to promote practical solutions including: 🌧️ Rainwater harvesting 💧 Groundwater recharge 🌱 Plantation and environmental protection 🏡 Community-based water conservation 🕌 Rainwater harvesting at mosques and community spaces 🏫 Sustainable solutions for schools and institutions 🌍 Climate action and water security Our aim is not simply to build one project. Our aim is to demonstrate what is possible and help people replicate these solutions across Lahore and beyond. This Lahore project can become a model where people learn, implement and inspire others. Rain is not a problem. Wasted rainwater is. Let us save the water falling from the sky today so that our children do not have to search for it tomorrow.
