The caste-based reservation system in India has its roots in efforts to address historical social inequalities and discrimination faced by marginalized communities, particularly the Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), and Other Backward Classes (OBCs). The concept was first introduced in British India with the Poona Pact of 1932, which reserved seats in legislative bodies for SCs.
