Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi asked a question after a massive police bandobast prevented a delegation of opposition lawmakers from marching to the Election Commission of India in the heart of New Delhi on Tuesday.
“Around 300 Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs came here some time ago,” Rahul told reporters covering the high drama unfolding in the streets of the capital over the poll panel’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls that has deleted around 13 crore names from voter lists across India and added lakhs of names in a sweeping nationwide exercise. “We wanted to meet chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and his two colleagues. The police stopped us here,” Rahul said at the Akashvani Bhawan premises near the Election Commission.
“We are representatives of the people of India and represent the voice of the country. I do not know why 300 MPs have been stopped here and made to sit here and are not being allowed to go to the Election Commission. I do not know what the problem is," he said. Delhi police stopped Rahul and other opposition MPs when they were trying to reach the Election Commission.
Rahul stepped up his attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union home minister Amit Shah, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and CEC Gyanesh Kumar, alleging the first three had “hijacked” the country through “vote chori” (vote theft) with Kumar’s help. “There will be action against them. None of them will be spared be it PM Modi, home minister Shah, RSS chief Bhagwat or CEC Gyanesh Kumar. What has been done to our country is treason. Nobody is going to escape,” Rahul declared.
“I am not interested in what the BJP says. I am standing here to protect democracy in the country,” he said, adding that Modi, Shah, Bhagwat and Gyanesh Kumar had “finished off democracy” in India.
