#history #DekhoSunoJano #faisalwarraich In 1947, the emergence of Pakistan as a new Muslim state sparked a bitter dispute with Afghanistan over the question of Pashtunistan. King Zahir Shah’s government in Kabul was so determined to challenge the Durand Line that it initially refused to recognise Pakistan and even voted against its membership in the United Nations. Afghanistan also supported tribal incursions across the border, which were repulsed by Pakistani forces and tribesmen. Then, in 1953, Daud Khan became Prime Minister of Afghanistan and pursued the Pashtunistan cause with even greater zeal. The controversy surrounding One Unit in West Pakistan, coupled with the arrest of Bacha Khan and other nationalist leaders brought the two countries to repeated military standoffs and border clashes. Eventually, Daud Khan took the confrontation a step further by closing the Pak-Afghan border, hoping to inflict economic pressure on Pakistan. Instead, the move triggered a severe economic crisis in Afghanistan and ultimately contributed to Daud Khan’s downfall.
